Everything Session 4 (Health Behaviour) Flashcards

1
Q

What are Health Related Behaviours?

A

They are actions that promote good or bad health
Good Health Behaviour = Exercise

Q

About the Classical Conditioning Learning Theory

A

Its learning by association
A person makes an association between a certain cue and a behaviour
E.g: Person associates watching the football with drinking a beer

Q

Example of medical use of Classical Conditioning

A

Giving alcoholics medication which will induce nausea when alcohol consumed (Disulfiram)
Pairs cue of drinking to Nausea so likely to not want to drink
Changes health behaviour by utilising Classical Conditioning

Q

What is the Operant Conditioning Learning Theory?

A

Built on CLASSICAL CONDITIONING THEORY
Behaviour is shaped by (reward or punishment)
So behaviour is driven by short term/immediate rewards
Drug taking = immediate reward (long term consequences not considered)

Q

What is the main problem that the Classical Conditioning and Operant Conditioning Learning models are limited by?

A

Does take into account many factors like:
-Social context
-Knowledge
-Cognitive processes
-Beliefs
-Memory attitudes or expectations

Q

What is Social Learning Thoery?

A

How people learn form people around them
-Influence of family, peers, social media figures and celebrities
-People are motivated to perform behaviours if the behaviours are valued and they believe they can do the behaviour (self-efficacy)
-Learn behaviours that we see others (models) getting rewarded for. Higher status model = more effective

Q

What is the Cognitive Dissonance theory?

A

A Social Cognition model

Dissonance = lack of agreement/harmony

Feeling a mental discomfort prompts changes in behaviour to restore cognitive balance

E.g Smoking Kills stickers create mental discomfort prompting behaviour change

Q

What is the Health Belief Model?

A

A Social Cognition Model

The likelihood of a person adopting a health related behaviour depends on the persons personal belief in the threat of an illness/disease and the health related behaviours effectiveness

Q

What is the Theory of Planned Behaviour?

A

A Social Cognition Model

Describes the likelihood of an individual taking up a health behaviour being closely linked to the strength of their intentions to engage in the behaviour.

Q

What is Opportunity in the COM-B model?

A

Physical and social opportunity
Time
Rss
Cues/prompts

18
Q

What are the 2 Key influences on behaviour?

A

Knowledge/capability (About risks of behaviour)
Motivation (beliefs of consequences of behaviour/desire to change)
