What is Darwin’s theory of evolution?
Evolution by natural selection
Everything evolved from simple life forms 3 billi years ago
explained his finding in the book “origin of species” which was published in 1859
Why was Darwin’s theory only gradually accepted?
conflicted with the religious view that God made all the animals and plants
Darwin did not have the evidence to convince scientists
took 50 years after it was published to discover how variation and inheritance worked
What was Lamarck’s theory?
a characteristic which is used by an organisms becomes bigger and stronger
one that is not used disappears
any feature that is altered is passed to offspring
How natural selection occurs?
individual organisms in a species show a range of variation because of genetic differences
individuals with characteristics are more like to survive and breed
the genes that enabled the individuals to be successful are passed on to the next generation
