Exam 1 Ch 1-3 Flashcards
(15 cards)
6 Characteristics of Life
-Growth and Development
-Movement
-Metabolism
-Responsiveness
-Reproduction
-Organization
5 Factors to sustain life
-Food/nutrients:metabolism
-Oxygen:energy
-Water:secretions and excretions
-Normal body temp: 98.6 F
-Pressure:Atmospheric
-Hydrostatic:pressure liquid exerts due to pressure of water above it
Body Cavities and structures found within
Dorsal: cranial cavity:brain
-vertebral cavity:spinal cord
Ventral: thoracic cavity: pleural cavities-lungs
-Mediastinum-superior mediastinum & pericardial cavity-heart
-Abdominopelvic cavity:abdominal cavity:digestive organs
Pelvic cavity:urinary & reproductive organs
Are all atoms the same?
No, they can be identical or combination of diff atoms
Diff between Organic & Inorganic compounds. What are we made up of?
Inorganic: Substances that help maintain life
Organic: what makes up human body (nucleic acids, lipids, carbohydrates, proteins)
What is the basic unit of all organic compounds?
Lipids-no unit, hydrophobic, used for cellular structure + make energy
Nucleic acids:nucleotides(info storage)
Carbohydrates: rings of carbon bonded over and over again(energy production)
Proteins:amino acids(structural components of tissues+facilitate chemical reactions
Explain structure of cell membrane. What makes it up?
-phospholipids: arranged in a bilayer
-Cholesterol:lipids
-membrane proteins
-surface carbohydrates for cell recognition
4 adult tissue types & functions
-Nervous: electrical messages in brain & nerves
-Epithelial: covers, lines, forms glands
-Muscle: contracts movements
-Connective: supports, fills spaces, transports, store energy
3 embryonic tissues and what adult tissue do they give rise to?
-Ectoderm:epithelial & nervous
-Mesoderm: all 4
-Endoderm:epithelial
List & describe anatomical features all epithelial tissues have in common
Top & Bottom regions w/bottom having to connect
to connective tissue. Cells are then touching and nerve has no blood supply
Classification of adult epithelial tissues
layers: simple(one layer), pseudo stratified, stratified(multiple layers)
shape: squamous, cuboidal, columnar
How are function and structure complementary?
Function is dependent on structure, & form
of structure relates to it’s function
6 Features of Chordates
-DHNT:brain & spinal cord
-Notochord: intervertebral discs (holds embryo together)
-Endostyle(thyroid gland):
-pharyngeal slits: Eustachian tube merges w/ear canal & throat
-postanal tail:coccyx
-segmented body musculature:
3 Vertebrae Features
-Neural Crest tissue: parts of NS, skeleton, glands, etc
-Ectodermal placodes: thickening of skin in head region develop into eyes, nose, ears
-Skull: protects brain
Do all vertebrates also have all the features of a chordate?
No only Chordates that are also
vertebrates have the 3 features
