Chap 1: Know the story of Pahoran2, Paanchi, Pacumeni, Kishkumen, Coriantumr, and Moronihah. 1:5, 8: Mosiah 29:25-27: Know the concept of the voice of the people? How do we make sure we fulfill our responsibility as the “voice of the people”?

Kishkumen was in disquise and got away with the murder

Lamanites gather together and come down to fight the nephites as pacumeni is judge after his brothers death
Coiantemur: bad guy leading the lamanites to attack the nephites

Morinihah, son of Moroni, surrounds the lamanites and killed many including coriantemr
Tubula: king of lamanites at the time, assumed lamanites could win

Helaman 2 became chief judge, gadiantons rose ; kishkumen was plotting to kill helaman 2, but helaman 2’s servant went undercover and killed kishkumen

3:34-37: Know the doctrine of spiritual rebirth from Moses 6:59-60: water/obedience, Spirit/justification, blood/sanctification. Define justification and sanctification, how they are attained and what are their effects.
Being born again:
birth: water, blood, spirit: 3 principles
born again: water of baptism, spirit of the holy ghost, blood of christ’s atonement
Justification: pardoned, without sin, or guiltless
By spirit you are justified and by blood you are sanctified
Chapters 3-4: Know the five stages in the Pride Cycle. How might this describe our lives and culture? Define pride in terms of self, others, God and its causes and results. What are some of the causes of pride according to the scriptures. What is the opposite of pride? How do we attain humility according to the scriptures and Pres. Benson?

How is the account of the coming of Christ in the Americas a model for the Second Coming? Know the five characteristics.

Chap 5: 5:18-52. Know the story of Nephi and Lehi: who are they named after, effects of their preaching, the story of their being surrounded by fire in prison, the miracles, the voice and Aminadab—know his message and results. 5:2-3 What has happened to the voice of the people (See Mosiah 29:25-27)?

Why do they live in societies? What was the response of the Lamanites and the Nephites to this threat? What happened to the Nephite government? How and why do they destroy freedom and liberty? From Elder Ballard’s talk know some of the specific kinds of secret combinations in our society and what we can do to fight against them.

How do the Nephites know this? What does this suggest about his prophecy of the coming of Christ? 8:27-28: What sign/prophecy does Nephi give here?
They are mad at nephi for publicly condemning their actions

Jeremiah’s prophecy has come true: the people of Jerusalem have been destroyed

Chap 9: Know the story of the murder of the chief judge Seezoram by Seantum and how Nephi solves it. Know Seezoram and Seantum. 9:2, 23-26, 39-41: What was the result of Nephi’s prediction What prophecy of Nephi’s has come true? What should the people do that recognize Nephi is a prophecy?
Seezoram is the chief judge of the nephites and is killed by seantum who wants his place
Nephi is inspired that seantum is the murderer and declares it
Nephis fulfillment comes true as seantum is eventually convicted of murder
- Helaman 10-12: Chap 10:1-3: What was Nephi pondering and what did the voice tell him? Define pondering and what its value is. List the things that can help us ponder better.
Nephi was pondering what to do about the wicked nephites
His people were wicked
Ponder: to meditate and think deeply
10:5-7: What power was given to Nephi and why? What was the goal? List the three categories of blessings/curses. What example did Jesus give us about accepting the will of the Father? How do we ascertain the will of the Lord? List and discuss the ways Heavenly Father uses to help get us to repent?

Chap 11:4-16: What does Nephi ask the Lord to replace war with to get the Nephites to repent? What happens? How does Nephi end the famine?
Replace war and destruction with a famine
Suffer and perish: wakeup call to listen to God
Nephites get humbled and Nephi prays to God to end the famine
11:17-20: What did the end of the famine lead to? 11:22-38: Be able to describe the things that crept into Nephite society following prosperity. What did the Nephites attempt to do to the robbers?
Rejoice and glorify god! But they began to prosper again
Nephites tried fighting back but the Robbers were too strong
Chap 12: Song of Mormon. 12:2-3: What happens when people prosper? What does it mean when it says “the Lord chastens his people”? 12: 7-9: In what way are the children of men nothing? How is the dust superior to humans?
They get arrogant and prideful (pride cycle)
Children of men are worth less than the dust of the earth
The dust reacts and listens to God
The lord tightens us up and humbles us
- Helaman 13-16: 13:1-3: Who was Samuel, what year did he come, why did he leave his mission and why did he return? Name three others in the Book of Mormon who returned to their ministries.

- nephites cast him out but he chose to return to his mission after the lord stopped him and commanded him to amidst his trek back
Why was it so difficult for the Nephites to listen to a Lamanite? What kind of similar challenges do we have? How can we improve? What is a prophet and according to our class discussion what are four things they do? How does Samuel do all four of these? What kinds of spiritual gifts can we expect to find accompanying the true Church and the power of the Priesthood? See D&C 63:8-12; 68:10-11.
