Q

30:6-11: Know Nephite law about belief. What are three possible reasons Korihor was bound and taken before officials.

A

What is meant by freedom of belief?
Why was Korihor arrested if he was free to believe?
Perhaps there are some details missing in the text
Possibilities:
A. Mosiah 27:2. There is a law against persecuting others. Korihor in seeking to destroy the church was perhaps perceived as persecuting others
B. Alma 1:17 against the law to lie. Korihor lied about the church leaders deceiving the people for gain
C. Lev. 24:16 blasphemy (Alma 30:30).

Q

1a) 13-14: Empiricism: No man can know of anything which is to come. Prophecies are foolish traditions. What is empiricism? How is this approach useful in our lives? How can this be a convincing argument to some against spiritual things? What parts of the Gospel are affected by this argument? How will Alma respond? How does Riddle respond?

A

knowledge through the senses, experience
44 But Alma said unto him: Thou hast had signs enough; will ye tempt your God? Will ye say, Show unto me a sign, when ye have the testimony of all these thy brethren, and also all the holy prophets? The scriptures are laid before thee, yea, and all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator.
Scriptures are proof, so is earth

2) 17-18: Humanism. No atonement. Every man fared in this life according to management and genius. Define humanism. How can this be a convincing argument. How will Alma respond?

A

we succeed on our own, Why is this a strong argument? Because many things in life do depend on human. In mortality many—both righteous and wicked get rich and famous due to their genius, humans must take responsibility to address disasters, help the poor, right wrongs, address human catastophies, etc.
alma says christ is essential

Q

43-44: Why does Korihor want a sign? Know the four kinds of evidence Alma cites for the existence of God.

A

“the doctrine that knowledge, truth, and morality exist in relation to culture, society, or historical context, and are not absolute.”
This can be a powerful argument because we are all shaped by our genetics, environment and culture. But there is more!

3) 17 Relativism: Whatsoever a man does was no crime. What is relativism? Why persuasive to some? What is a response?

A

“relating” to today; God’s laws are the same always, the doctrine that truth, knowledge, and morality exist in relation to culture, society, history; powerful because we are all shaped by environment; no, we change to fit god’s laws

Q

Know the proper function of signs in the Lord’s plan—D&C 63:8-10; Mormon 9:24-25. 45-60: Know the end of the story of Korihor. What was the sign? 52-53: What does Korihor reveal about his beliefs? Why didn’t Alma take away the curse? How did Korihor die? 60: What is Mormon’s message from this story?

A

brought before alma and the chief judge; korihor was struck dumb; it’s better that he gets lost than other people get brought down; sign= earth, planets; if you don’t stop, god will smite you (make you dumb, can’t talk), Korihor dies and says he always knew there was a God; the devil deceived me and appeared to me as an angel; alma says the curse will stay because the lord’s will will be done bc he will keep talking; cast out of the city and went knocking door to door for food

they were twisting the truths of the lord; they worried they would join forces with the laminates; they gather on the day of the lord and worship in synagogues; stand up and only emit one person who would stretch out their hands and cry to god

Q

32:21-22, 27: Know the definition of faith and its relationship to hope. What is the relationship of faith and belief to knowledge? How is this a response to Korihor?

A

faith is not a perfect knowledge; faith means you hope for things that you cannot see but know are true; debunks empirism

17
Q

27-43: What is the experiment Alma gives to develop faith? How is this a response to Korihor in terms of empiricism?

A

faith like a seed; it grows without being seen!! empiricism response

18
Q

What are the six steps necessary to perform this experiment?

A
  1. humility, 2. desire, 3. plant the seed, 4. observe the evidence, 5. nourish the seed, 6. pluck the fruit
19
Q

What do we have to do to help the seed grow into a plant?

A

nourish it! don’t neglect, humility, desire

20
Q

33:1-11: What did Zenos teach about prayer?

A

pray anywhere and always; prayers are always heard; pray and worship in all places; Zenos: ancient prophet

21
Q

33:22-23: What is the seed according to this passage?

A

faith in Jesus Christ

22
Q

34:7-8: What testimonies does Amulek cite? 34:15-16: What is the purpose of the atonement?

A

Zenos, zenock, Moses; all men with unavoidably die without one

22
Q

32:27-43: According to Alma what can we know and how do we know it? How do we apply this experiment to our own lives?

A

have desire, exercise a particle of faith, it will swell within your breasts; PLANT THE SEED: nourish and do not neglect

23
Q

Chap 33:22-23: What is the word that Alma invites them to plant? What does this mean for us who want to plant the word? 34:4-6: What is the word?

A

faith in Jesus Christ, His atonement, and His resurrection; exercise faith

24
34:17-29, 39: What is Amulek’s teaching about prayer? If we truly pray what will our attitudes and actions be towards the poor?
CRY UNTO HIM ALWAYS; welfare focused; have charity!
25
34:30-35: What is mortality a time for? Why should we NOT procrastinate?
life is the time to prepare to meet GOD! don't procrastinate because the devil will have all power over you
26
35:3, 6, 9-10, 14-16: What happened to the converts among the Zoramites? What did the Zoramites do with the Lamanites? Why does Alma gather his sons together?
they were cast out; zoramites made an alliance with the laminates because they were angry; plan to fight the nephites; After witnessing the growing wickedness and the increasing threat of war, Alma felt a deep urgency to counsel and strengthen his sons in their faith
