What does abridgment mean?
In the context of the Book of Mormon, an abridgment refers to a condensed or summarized version of a larger record. Instead of including every detail from the original writings, the abridgers (such as Mormon and Moroni) selected, summarized, and compiled key events, teachings, and revelations that they felt were most important for future generations.
Know the two time periods of the records (Jaredites and Nephites).
The two time periods of the records in the Book of Mormon are:
Jaredites (circa 2200 B.C. – unknown, likely around 400–300 B.C.)
Their record is found in the Book of Ether and was abridged by Moroni from the plates of Ether.
The Jaredites came to the Americas after the Tower of Babel and built a great civilization, but they eventually fell into wickedness and were completely destroyed.
Nephites and Lamanites (circa 600 B.C. – 400 A.D.)
Their history is the main focus of the Book of Mormon, and it was abridged by Mormon from the large plates of Nephi.
The Nephites and Lamanites descended from Lehi’s family, who left Jerusalem around 600 B.C.
The Nephite civilization was ultimately destroyed by the Lamanites around 400 A.D., with Moroni being the last surviving Nephite.
These two civilizations existed in different time periods, but both faced cycles of righteousness and wickedness, leading to their eventual destruction.
Who were two abridgers of the record and what did they abridge?
Mormon – He abridged the large plates of Nephi, which contained the historical records of the Nephites. He compiled much of the Book of Mormon from these records, summarizing the history and teachings of the Nephite civilization.
Moroni – He completed his father Mormon’s record, added his own writings, and abridged the Jaredite record found on the plates of Ether (this became the Book of Ether). He also included the book of Moroni before sealing up the record.
