Exam 1d Flashcards
(32 cards)
Rupture of the pectoralis major
A rare injury that occurs when excessive stress causes a tear of the tendon or possible avulsion fx at the greater tuberosity
Subclavius
Muscle found below the clavicle
Origin of the subclavius
First rib
Insertion of the subclavius
Subclavian groove of the clavicle
Action of the subclavius
Pulls the clavicle medically and thus stabilizes the sternoclavicular joint (used when hanging by the hands)
- also serves as a protective barrier between a fx clavicle and underlying blood vessels
Poland syndrome
- Absence of both pectoralis major and minor
- atrophy of the mammary glands
- absence of several ribs
- hand me smaller and have webbing
Axilla
Space between the arm and the chest wall, which is in the shape of a truncated pyramid
Apex of the axella
(Upper end) triangular space bounded by the clavicle, scapula and the first rib
Base of the axella
the base (lower portion) is made up of skin and fascia
Anterior wall of the axilla
Pectoralis major
Posterior wall of the axilla
Latissimus Doris and Teres major
Brachial plexus
Organizational arrangement of nerves headed to the upper extremity located into the axilla
Lateral cord contains which cords
C5
C6
C7
Medial cord contains which nerves
C8
T1
Posterior cord contains which cords
All the cords C5 C6 C7 C8 T1
Nerves in the upper trunk
Suprascapular
Subscapular
Dorsal scapula
Nerve from the lateral chord
Lateral pectoral nerve
Nerve from the posterior chord
Lower, medial, upper, subscapular nerves
Nerves in the medial nerve
- Medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve
- Medial brachial cutaneous nerve
- Medial pectoralis cutaneous nerve
Prefixed brachial plexus
C4 is the most superior nerve root forming the plexus, C8 would be the most inferior spinal nerve
Postfixed brachial plexus
C6 is the most superior spinal nerve root, T2 the most inferior
Paralysis
Complete loss of muscular movement
Paresis
Movement can be performed but is weak (incomplete paralyses)
Anesthesia
Partial or complete loss of sensation w/ or w/out loss of consciousness
