(20 cards)
microbicidal
kills cells or causes irreversable changes
microbistatic
prevention of microbe growth
denaturation
normal characteristic loss due to molecular alteration
turbid
cloudy appearance w/in the tube; evidence of microbe population growth
how many temp classifications are there and what are their names?
3 classification stages
minimal temperature
optimal temperature
maximum temperature
minimal temp
the lowest temp @ which an organism can survive
optimal temp
the temp defined @ which an organism shows its greatest rate of growth over time
maximum temp
the highest temp @ which an organism can survive
-phile
suffix meaning lover of favoring of certain temp
what are pyschrophiles
organisms adapted to cold temps, and min/max temps ranging from -5%c to -20%c, are found in artic/antartic regions since temps rarely change and cold is constant
What is a mesophile
an organism with min/max temps ranging from 10%c to 50%c, optimal growth temp ranges from 20%c to 40%c
Why are mesophiles more of a concern for humans versus pschrophiles?
mesophiles favor the temps at which our body holds as a constant, as well as the fact that psychrophiles live in the artic/antartic
what is considered a thermophile
an organism with an optimal growth temp ranging from 45%c to 80%c, most thermophiles can be found in compost “organic materials” as well as hotsprings
hypothermophile
AKA an extreme thermophile favoring temps 70%c and above
what does the term obligate mean
w/out alternatives restricted to a particular characteristic
-troph
suffix added to species name if the species has a wide temp range
psychrotroph
microorganism with a wide temp range, receives the “-troph” suffix
what is th e formula to soleve for absorption
A=2-log%T
% of transmission is provided, solve for absorption
%T= 91.0
A=2-log%T
=2-log(91.0)
=2-1.9590
A = 0.041
% of transmission is provided, solve for absorption
%T= 94.5
A=2-log%T
=2-log(94.5)
=2-1.9754
A = 0.0246= 0.25
