What are the 4 types of experiments
Lab
Field
Natural
Quasi
What is a lab experiment
Controlled environment
IV is manipulated and DV is measured
+ and - of lab experiments
+ high internal validity as externaous variables are controlled
+ replication is easier due to standardised procedures
- low ecological validity as artificial settings don’t reflect real life
- demand characteristics as pups may guess aim and later behaviour so not reliable
What is a field experiment
Natural environment where IV manipulated and DV measured
+ and - of field experiments
+ high ecological validity as the behaviour is more natural
+ reduced demand characteristics as its harder for pups to guess aim
- less control over externaous variables which reduces internal validity
What is a natural experiment
IV occurs naturally and is not manipulated, DV is measured
In natural environment
+ and - of natural environments
+ allows study of variables that cannot be ethically manipulated e.g trauma
+ high ecological validity if conducted in real life settings
- no control over IV leading to low internal validity
What is a quasi experiment
IV is based on pre existing differences and is not manipulated
+ and - of quasi experiments
+ can compare naturally occurring groups
+ useful when random allocation is not possible
- no manipulation of IV so cannot establish casualty confidently
