Sampling Flashcards
(12 cards)
Population vs sample
Population is the entire groups the researcher is interested in studying, sample is a smaller group selected from the population
What are the 5 sampling techniques
Random
Systematic
Stratified
Opportunity
Volunteer
What is random sampling
Every member of population has an equal chance of being selected e.g drawn from hat
+ and - of random sampling
+ unbias
- still possibilities of an unrepresentative sample
What is systematic sampling
Every nth person is selected from a list e.g every 5th person on a register
+ and - of systematic sampling
+ reduces researcher bias
+ simple and objective method
- can still be unrepresentative
What is stratified sampling
Population divided into subgroups e.g age and then selected proportionally from each group randomly
+ and - of stratified sampling
+ highly representative and reflects population structure
+ reduces bias
- time consuming
- required detail knowledge of population
What is opportunity sampling
Selecting people who are available and willing to at the time
+ and - of opportunity sampling
+ quick and easy
- highly biased and not representative
- limits generalisability
What is volunteer sampling
Pps choose to take part e.g sign up
+ and - of volunteering sampling
+ easy to manage as pps come to u
+ pps motivated and cooperative
- volunteer bias as attract certain types of ppl e.g confident
