Exponents Flashcards
(10 cards)
If you see X = X^2… the answer is either
1 or 0
negative bases raised by an even number…
negative bases raised by an odd..
Positive answer
Negative answer
Is this correct and why?
-X^N = (-x)^n
PEMDAS dictates the exponent is applied to X only on the left and then the answer is made negative
On the right, the exponent is distributed to both X and -1, then you take the product of that
Fractional bases or decimals when raised to any power…
Will become closer to zero
If exponent is larger you can do what with a fraction…
Distribute to the numerator and denominator separately
If exponent is applied to a large term or a variable plus coefficient…
You can take the factors of the term and then distribute exponent to each of them
When simplifying terms an expression with a common base you can…
Factor out a common term
What is the immediate short cut you can do with…
XZ^7 + XZ^7 + XZ^7 + XZ^7 =
- observe identical terms
- count number of them
- Multiply one of those terms by the number you counted…
XZ^7 (4)
For ANY even exponent what is hidden?
Exp. X^2 = 9
The sign of the base
Could be +3 or -3… meaning there are 2 roots aka solutions
Solve W
(4 ^w) ^3 = 32 ^ W -1
Must rewrite by factoring to ensure either the same exponent or base remains for efficiency
(2 ^ 2W) ^ 3 = 2 ^ 5(w - 1)
Then you can drop the base!!
6w = 5w-5
