- argentinia economy having severe problems - galtieri hoped successful war reclaiming falklands would restore belief

- april 1982 - 12,000 argentinian troops invaded islands - quickly took control
- also attacked south georgia and south sandwich islands

- received near universal support from public
- britain sent task force of 100 ships and 28,000 troops to islands - 320km exclusion zone
- conflict ended 14th june - argentina surrendered
