- 1774 - 56 representatives from colonies met at first congress in philadelphia - decision made to fight british - war of independence began

- july 1775 - george washington appointed leader of american army
- july 1776 - congress met again and formally declared themselves independent

- most irish people saw this as invasion - population grew rapidly as thousands of settlers arrived bringing their own customs and religion
