East india company?

A
  • set up in 1600 - had monopoly over british trade in india
  • EIC ships carried cheap british goods and traded them for goods in far countries
  • silk, coffee, spices brought back to england - EIC businessmen and monarchs made fortune
  • india important base for much of britains growth in global trading
  • EIC first set up trading posts in Surat (1612), Madras (1638) and Bombay (1668)
  • had its own army, navy, local indian people trained to become soldiers for EIC
  • monopoly ended in 1694

A
  • 1757 - 3000 company troops (2200 local indians) led by robert clive defeated indian army of over 40,000
  • led by prince siraj-ud-daula (helped by french)
  • victory allows EIC to take over benglan - one of richest parts of india

A
  • while governor of bengal, won battle of plassey in 1757 - oversaw plunder of region making fortune
  • returned to india as governor and commander-in-chief of bengal 1764-67 - green and mismanagement increased devastation of 1700 bengal famine - 10m died

Indian rebellion 1857

A
  • sepoys objected to new cartridges - british ignored objections
  • may 1857 - Meerut - 85 sepoys refused to use the cartridges - sent to jail for 10 years
  • 1 day later - other sepoys rose up in support of prisoners - broke them out of jail - british officers killed and army barracks/homes lit on fire
