What are the main functions
Procreation, provision of the basic needs of members of the family, regulation of kin relationships, conferment of status, transmission of culture and establishment /maintenance of an economic unit
Procreation
The biological process through which humans multiply.
Socialization
This means that people reply on each other for their existence. This is called interdependence. As you grow and mature you experience a continuous process of social development called socialization.
Major aspects of socialization
Development of character- it is the responsibility of older family members of the family and the society to teach and model good human, spiritual and ethical values.
This helped build the integrity and moral character of younger members of the family.
Values of love, truth, honesty, reverence for God, respect for self and others, hard work, obedience and decency are important personal attributes that are necessary.
The acquisition of intellectual and practical skills- through education and training, the individual acquired skills which prepare him or her for gainful employment. Person becomes a responsible productive member of society.
The development of personality- includes the individual’s self concept, distinctive qualities and attributes and other qualities that define his or her image and character.
What are kin relationships
It refers to the blood relationships of family members.was are I place to prevent marriages and sexual relations among family members or close relatives.
Describe incest.
Incest is the term used to describe sexual relations among families who are closely related by blood.
It can cause genetic disorders or disabilities when children are born.
What is conferment of status
Status speaks of the position or place that a person holds in society, that is, how the person is viewed. It includes the persons rights and responsibilities. Status may be ascribed, meaning that if given to or conferred on a person. Or it may be achieved meaning it’s earned.
Ascribed status
Is conferred on the child at birth or adoption. It includes citizenship, religion and membership in the community. Examples: gender, age, race
Achieved status
Come from society and is often the result of an individual’s hard work, education and training. Examples: the status of a bank manager, school teacher or priest.
Culture
Culture may be defined as beliefs, values, behaviors, customs, and social and artistic heritage shared by a particular group of people. Passed down from one generation to another next.
Your cultured is reflected on how you dress for different occasions, how you speak, your meals, the types of food you eat, the person you marry, and the ways in which you spend your free or leisure time.
It is not inherited it is created by people and must be learnt .
Building and sustaining culture and life of the community
Every family should have a good understanding of of its community. Including its history, resources and how they are used, rituals, culinary practices, anniversaries and celebrations.
Building and maintaining social networks
Social networks include the friendships established through various community institutions and organizations. Without social networks and a good understanding of the community, the family is unable to develop an actively engaged and connected relationship with the community.
Enhancing the sustainability of the community’s environment.
The general upkeep, health and safety of the environment is a party of the responsibility of every family and individual. As each person takes control of the upkeep of bus own personal environment and helps in the basic upkeep of community roads, garbage disposal, pest and insect control, the family increases its ownership of the community and grows in the community pride and partnership.
Helping in the maintenance of law and order
Families and individuals are also expected to participate actively in the justice system developed for maintaining law and order in the community and wider society. Such participation includes the formation and management of neighborhood watch groups, police youth clubs and the installation of Justices of the Peace who, among other functions, sometimes preside over the trial of minor criminal offences.

Some natural resources are regulated by laws. Individuals and families need to access land for building their homes, setting up their business and providing food.
The community working through the policies of the government departments help to make provisions for individuals and families to own and use these resources.
Access to basic amenities and infrastructure
This hampers the social and economic development of the community.
This lack creates many stressful problems for individuals and families as these things are basic needs.
Basic amenities are safe and sustained water and electricity supply, transportation and telecommunications. Basic infrastructure includes good road networks, bridges, airports, educational institutions, markets and parks.
Access to information
Verbal, written, face to face, bulletin boards, radio, television and other online media.
