Q

how does velcro work?

19
Q

what are D-rings used for?

A

altering the length of bag straps or belts

20
Q

what is the disadvantage of D-rings?

A

they are not a secure fastening, and they purely rely on the friction between the D-ring and the fabric to stay in place

21
Q

what are the advantages of hook and eye fastenings?

A

-they are discreet

22
Q

what are hook and eye fastenings used in?

A

-bra fastenings
-where edges meet the top of a garment e.g a dress
-where edges overlap on garments e.g trousers

23
Q

what are the disadvantages of using ribbon as a fastening?

A

-they are not secure
-if on children’s clothing/toys it must follow strict BSI safety regulations to avoid strangulation.

24
Q

what are the advantages of using ribbon as a fastening?

A

-cheap
-easy to use

25
how are decorative braids made?
by plaiting or weaving braids
26
how is ribbon made?
ribbon is woven with fine warp yarns with a high warp density
27
what is ribbon made from?
polyester and silk to give it a lustrous appearance
28
what can ribbon be used for?
fastenings or as decorative finishes
29
how is pipping made?
by a strip of bias fabric being folded over a cord and being inserted and sewn into a seam
30
what is pipping cord made from?
cotton or polyester fibres
31
what is fine cord vs thicker cord used for?
fine cord- garments thicker cord- furnishings
32
what is pipping used for?
-definining outlines in a garment or furnishing -strengthens areas which are vulnerable to abrasion
33
how is fringing made?
it is made of lengths of cord or yarn attached to a narrow top band, and can be made of cotton, wool or silk
34
what can fringing be used for?

how can diamante's be applied to fabrics?
-some already come pre-glued -some need to be glued onto fabric
38
what are textile components?
pre-manufactured items that help finish a textile product. e.g threads, fastenings, trims and e-components
39
why must components be chosen carefully?
-they have to be suitable for the style and function of the garment (if a garment will go through a lot of wear and tear it will need more secure fastenings) -must be compatible with the fibre content, structure, weight and aftercare of the fabric used -safe and efficient -within budget and easily sourced -suitable for use with existing machinery and equipment
40
what is the purpose of E-components?
to add decorative and functional features
41
to work, what do e-components need?
-they must be part of a circuit and have a power source (like a battery)
42
what is conductive sewing thread used for?
to connect the e-components to a low-voltage power source such as a coin cell battery (a battery that looks like a coin)
43
what are some examples of e-components?
-wearable sensors that monitor change in temperature, moisture and medical devices -intergrated communication systems -sound effects
44
