What is a febrile seizure?

What are the types of febrile seizure? What is the difference between them?

A

A seizure in children with a febrile illness between 6 months - 5 years.

Simple febrile seizure: generalised, tonic clonic seizure lasting < 15 minutes occurs once during fever

Complex febrile seizure: partial or focal seizure lasting > 15 minutes that occurs multiple times during fever

Management of a febrile seizure?

A

If lasts > 5 minutes → call ambulance, managed with benzodiazapenes
All seizures require investigation for cause
