Signs and symptoms of meningitis?
Lethargy
Headache
Rigors
Vomiting
Rapidly developing purpuric skin rash (sign of meningococcal septicaemia causing DIC)
Hypovolaemic shock
Waterhouse Friderichsen syndrome (adrenal gland haemorrhage and septic shock)
Management of bacterial meningitis?
What is the post exposure prophylaxis for meningitis?
IM/IV benzylpenicillin STAT
Ciprofloxacin/Rifampicin
CSF lumbar puncture
Appearance: Bacterial (cloudy), viral (Clear)
Protein: Bacterial (high), viral (normal)
Glucose: bacterial (low), viral (normal)
WCC: Bacterial (high neutrophils), viral (high lymphocytes)
