Female histology Flashcards
(24 cards)
What are in the cortex of the ovary?
Follicles
Whats is in the medulla of the ovary?
Connective tissue Vessels (Highly vascular) Tissue Nerves Lymphatics
How is the ovary supplied by blood
A group of helicine arteries enter the hilum from the broad ligament
Type of epithelium around ovary?
Simple cuboidal epithelium
What are Oogonia?
Earliest germ cells, undergo development (oogenesis) and division via meiosis to form mature oocytes.
What is folliculogenesis?
Growth of the follicle (Oocyte and supporting cells)
What type of cells are pregranulosa cells?
Squamous
If follicle enters growth phase, become cuboidal.
What is the zona pellucida?
A layer of special extracellular matrix between the oocyte and granulosa cells
What is the theca interna?
Transformed inner layers of stromal cells
Purpose of theca interna?
Produce oestrogen precursors which is converted to oestrogen by the granulosa cells.
What is the antrum?
A space filled with follicular fluid which forms and creates a secondary follicle
What is the corpus luteum?
After ovulation, the follicle transforms into a corpus luteum which secretes oestrogen and progesterone.
What is the corpus albicans?
When no implanation occurs, the corpus luteum becomes a white connective tissue called corpus albicans.
What function does HCG serve when implantation occurs?
Placenta secretes HCG to prevent degeneration of corpus luteum to maintain progesterone–> Maintains pregnancy
Lining of the ampulla of uterine tube
Simple columnar epithelium with ciliated and secretory cells
Layers of the uterus?
Endometrium- Secretory mucosa
Myometrium- 3 layers of smooth muscle
Perimetrium- Visceral covering of connective tissue covered by mesothelium
Divisions of endometrium?
Stratum functionalis- Monthly growth, degeneration and loss
Stratum basalis- reserve tissue that regenerates functionalis
Cells in cervix?
Stratified squamous epithelium transition to mucous secreting simple columnar (common site of dysplasia in transition zone)
4 layers of vagina?
Non keratinized stratified squamous
Lamina propria
Fibromuscular
Adventitia
How is pathogen growth inhibited in the vagina?
Commensal bacteria metabolize the glycogen to lactic acid
Features of mons pubis?
Oblique hair follicles overlying s/c fat pad
Features of labia majora?
Rich in apocrine sweat glands
Sebaceous glands
Smooth muscle
Hair follicles on outer surface, not inner
Features of labia minora?
Rich in vasculature and sebaceous glands
Features of clitoris?
Contains two tubes of erectile vasc tissue (Corpora cavernosa)
