what does feminism aim for?
- gender equality. that men and women are given the same opportunities
- they aim to stop women being treated badly in a patriarchal society.
what are the positives and negatives of feminism?
- radical feminists criticise liberal feminists for not acknowledging that its more than just intuitions that are patriarchal
- differences in the economic position of women are not emphasised by Marxist feminism
+ liberal feminism has lead to campaigns resulting in western governments introducing laws/policies that improved women’s position in society.
what is a liberal feminist?
a feminist who believes that the main cause of inequality is a lack of legitimate opportunities for women in education, employment and politics
they think that the best way to bring about equality is through working within existing power structures to create equal opportunities.
what is a radical feminist?
a feminist that argues the structure of society is based on the oppression of women.
they want revolutionary change to bring about new gender roles and real equality.
what is a Marxist feminist?
feminists that believe that capitalism is partly to blame as women are exploited by capitalists. ( mix of beliefs of feminism and Marxism)
what are some other feminist theories?
dual system feminists- combination of Marxist and radical feminism.
difference feminism- claims that feminist theory has claimed a “false universality” for itself. every women has a different patriarchal experience.
poststructuralist feminism- concerned with discourses and stereotypes and power and how they should be rejected.
