Fetal Circulation Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is fetal circulation
the unique way a developing fetus’s circulatory system functions within the mother’s womb-directed to placenta for oxygenation
Ductus Venosus
Allows blood to bypass liver, taking 40-60% of blood flow which allows an increased amount of oxygenated blood to reach heart
Foramen ovale
opening in septum betwen L and R atria
allows 50% of to shunt directly to left ventricle
Ductus Arteriosus
located between pulmonary trunk and aortic arch, shunts 60% of blood away from pulmonary circulation into systemic atrial arch
Umbilical Vein
Carries oxygenated blood from placenta to inferior vena cava
umbilical vein enters fetal liver where it joins portal venous system
Umbilical arteries
carry deoxygenated blood from iliac arteries back to placenta
oxygenated blood
Right atrium to Left atrium via foramen ovale, Left atrium to left ventricle to ascending aorta
blood sent to brain via carotid and vertebral artieries and to the heart
deoxygenated blood
runs from umbilical vein to placenta
Enters Right atrium to Right ventricle, bypasses lungs, crosses arteriosus, moves via descending aiorta to placenta via 2 umbilical arteries.
CO2 and Wastes eliminated into mothers circulatory system.
Maternal Vein and Artery
they feed into the intervillous space (pools of maternal blood) and are there for Respiratory function, excretion, nutrition, immunity-antibodies
