A

regular, coordinated muscular contractions of the uterus which leads to effacement (thinning) and dilation of cervix
followed by expulsive contraction, birth of baby and placenta

A

cervix ripens and due to its stretching-releases oxytocin from posterior pituitary gland
increases uterine activity and labour begins
