Functions in the body/diet
make faeces moister and easier to excrete
stimulate peristalsis
absorbs in the stomach, swells and creates a feeling of fullness.
lowers the risk of heart disease by reducing chloestrol
types of fibre
soluble (jelly) fibre
-dissolves into a gel in the gut and binds with water. eg oats into porridge.
insoluble (woody) fibre
-referred to as “roughage”- remains mostly unchanged while passing through the gut. eg corn, brown rice
Too little
-constipation
-haemorrhoids
-irritable bowel syndrome
-diverticulitis
-increased risk of diet related disorders
Too much
-explosive effect
-abdominal pain and increase flatulence
-decrease the absorption of some minerals( iron, zinc and calcium)
Increase intake
-wholegrain cereals
-wholemeal or multigrain bread
-extra veg to every meal
-plenty of water
-fruit, dried fruits and nuts
