Detail: resulted in as much as 3m die. Marked start of long period of suffering, used by kim regime to promote more devotion.

Sig: While fail, inspired many more change from military to democracy
Detail: Mostly student led in the beginning, martial law, death toll of 200 but most likely far greater.

Sig: highlight notion that minjok is global and not just related to korea geographically.

Minjung movement

What: Movement that took nationalistic idea of minjok and applied to common people.
Significance: concept was used to define democratization movement and main ideologies of the revolving door of korean protestors.
Det: Aim to mobilize working class by exposing social and economic inequalities. It criticized unequal relationshiop with the US as well.

Det: Provided fuel in excahnge for IAEA inspectors, NK stopped missle test and stay in noon-proliferation treaty.

What: 8th ROK president elected in 1997
Sig: participated in economic recovery of SK and saved korea from bankruptcy.
Det: One of two koreans who won nobel peace prizze, instituted sunshine policy with NK.
Multicultural family
Date: 1990s
What: describe families of ROK nationals and marriage migrants.
Sig: Encouragement as a way of destigmatizing international marriage, shows moving beyond minjok.
Det: This movement was orig match rural korean men with korean chinese women. There is still a discrimination of children of multicul families however.
1988 seoul olympics
Date: 1988
What: Olympics held in seoul in 1988 and demonstrated koreas economic development.
Sig: A crowning achievement and chance to show the world of koreas achievements as korea was poor 30 years prior.
Det: Korea went through cleaning of the streets of what they deemed unclean. Son kijong carried torch who won gold under japan.

What: Largespread wave of korean pop culture internationally
Sig: the effect is tremendous contributing to gdp and boost on economy
Det: source of national pride. Hallyu originates in 1990s: kpop and kdramas, ROK supported by providing subsidies to cultural industries.

What: series of protests against park geunhye regime
Significant: led to parks impeachment
Details: 2.3 million most joined protests against corruption scandal. led to dissolution of the liberty korea party.
