Korean Provisional Government
Date : April 1919
The Korean provisional government was established in Shanghai by exiled Korean patriots in response to the Japanese suppression of the march first movement.
It played an important role in inspiring anti-japanese/imperialist both in an out of Korea. They published newspapers and phamplets in order to try and bring together cultural and armed resistance against the Japanese and bring Korea’s independence back..
An important figure in the Korean Provisional government was syngman Rhee who later became the first president of South Korea.
Battle of Poch’ŏnbo
Date: 1937
The battle of poch’onbo involved the Manchurian guerrilla movement and was led by Kim il sung to a successful mission against the Japanese.
This was one of the most significant guerrilla victories and became a source of legitimacy for the North Korean leader. Even though he only occupied pochonbo for a day, this victory has given Kim il-sung and his family line their line of credibility for leading the North Korean state.
“New Women”
Date: 1820
A movement of elite young Korean women who contributed to the emerging societal debate about gender roles by pursuing education, encouraging sexual freedom, and adopting western clothing fashion. It contributed significantly to the westernization of Korea and even became a source of popular anxiety regarding family stability/morals.
“New women” was a magazine published by na hyeonseok in 1820 who later became a major societal figure. This movement of “new women” was not only in Korea but was a global phenomenon.
Plan to Increase Rice Production
Date: 1920
Plan proposed and implemented by the government general in 1920 to rapidly expand rice production. Led to the creation of irrigation associations which put more pressure and fees on farmers and contributed to the ongoing depression in Korea. This plan was implemented in response to the rising demands for Korean rice due to the 1918 rice riots in Japan. While nearly 40% more rice production was made in Korea, most of it was exported and even less rice made it to Korean hands.
Cheju Uprising
Date: 1948
The Cheju uprising was a rise in communist insurgency in jeju island in oppose to the separate elections and leaders ship between the north and the south. Significant because of the brutality used by the north and the south in response to these uprising. Nearly 30k (10%) of jeju population was killed in response to the communist uprising and discussion of this massacre was suppressed until the democratization of Korea in the 1980s.
“Comfort Women”
Date: 2015
Wartime euphemism for sexual slaves in the Japanese military. This topic remains a very sensitive topic to this day in South Korea and Japan. Comfort women were seen as dirty due to the culture of deep purity in Korea. Often times, comfort women were recruited with money and easy work , opportunity and were tricked into these positions. In the Abe-park agreement, Japan accepted responsibility and payed out reparations in 2015 leading to many protests due to the agreement stating that it was final and irreversible.
“Movement to Create Imperial Subjects” (Kōminka Movement)
Date: 1937-1945
movement to create loyal korean subjects to the japanese empror as an aspect of total war. It was an attempt from japan to erase korean culture by banning free korean press, language, forcing japanese worship and making koreans adopt japanese names. The only korean newspaper was trhe maeil ilbo which was controlled by the japanese colonial government. A japanese name was required if they wanted to work for the government or go to school.
Special Volunteer Soldier System
Date: 1938-1943
An enlistment program that recruited young korean men into the japanes military. The volunteer system integrated koreans in japanese society while publicizing antiamerican propaganda to the citizens. The army recieved 800k appolications but only accepted 16k koreans. Many were forced and threatened to submit volunteer applications. Lieutenant park chung hee was an officer in the manchnukuo army and became the third president.
People’s Committees
Date: 1945
The peoples committees were established after the surrender of japan in 1945 and were significant because they were essential in maintaining order throughout the country as Korea transitioned out of japanese rule. They were later disbanded during american occupation as they were seen as communist . They were instrumental to the Committee for preparation of korean independence’s maintenance of order throughout the country.
No Gun Ri Massacre
Date: 1950
The No gun ri wwas a massacre of fleeing refugees by the members of the US army. This was due to the increasing fears of North Korean infiltration. This news was swept under the rug until a pulistzer prize winnning 1999 press report. After a long investiation, president clinton expresses regret but not an apology. Several hundred civilians were killed during this massacre.
Demilitarized Zone
Date: 1953
The demilitarized zone is the border that divides the korean peninsula in half into north and south along the 38th parallel. This border persists to this day due to the conflict ending on an armistice and not an official peace treaty. It serves as a securtiy measure and a reminder for both sides about the unresolved conflictd to this day and is one of the most heavily armed places.
Hŭngnam Evacuation
Date: 1950
UN forces abandoned the port city of hungnam during the battle of chosin reservoir and was significance because the event was labeled as a christmas miracle by SK conservatives because nearly 14k refugees were evacuated on the shiop SS meredith victory and arrived safely in SK on christmas day.
