Tan’gun
2333 BCE : Foudning father son of divine figure and bear mom according to legend.
Han’gŭl/Chosŏn’gŭl
1443: created by kikng sejeong during choson dynasty. independent writing system from chinese became popular in 19th and 20th century as nationalist symbol.
Yi Sun-sin
1545-1598: naval admiral of choson and respected legend in korean history known for his turtle boat and repeling japanese invaders at sea. Revered hero in Korea and symbol of anti-japanese resistance. Won decisisve victory in battle of hansan island.
Yangban
1392-1910: Scholar gentry class of choson dynasty. hereditary bureaucratic elite. Studied chinese and achieved government service by passing the civil service exam. They did not pay taxes and served as a check to the power of the king.
“Serving the great” (sadae)
1592 HIdeyoshi invasions: serving the great in relations with choson relation with ming and qing dynasties of china. Emphasis on hierarchy, distance, and nonintereference. Important during 1592 hideyoshi invasions when china provided backup. tributary missions oipening up trade and smuggling.
Silk Letter Incident
1801: Hwang sa yong Korean Catholic smuggled letter to french bishop in china. Suggested send warships. was intercepted and hwng sa yong was killed. controversy as trewason or matry.
Low-Rodgers Expedition
1871: 5 us warships and 1200 troops to kanghwa island to attempt to open trade in korea. resulted in death of 250 koreans and 3 americans. Plundered and took sujagi or the commanders flag. rembered as the western disturbance of 1871 in Korea. general sherman.
Kanghwa Treaty
1876: first unequal treaty with japanese. opened up ports for trade and japanese settlement. allowed japanese ships in korean waters. Opened up korea into the global arena of imperialism and represents the beginning of rising tensions between two nation.
Kapsin Coup
1884: members of the enlightenment party took over the royal palace with the hellp of japanese soldiers led by kim ok kyun. Issued 14 edicts. End tributary china, equal rights, corrupt and greedy persons bad. Ended with 180 dead with leaders fleeing to japan. Japan and china remove troops from korean soil but qing kept a “resident” in korea.
Ehwa Haktang
1885: first womens school opened by mary fitch scranton a protestant missionary. During the protestant missionary effort in late choson period, first womens school opened in seoul and was renamed by king kojong. They offered free lodging and food and remains the largest womens university by enrolment today.
Imo Soldiers’ Mutiny
1882: A small rebellion against the choson government because of its submission to japan through the kanghwa treaty. The soldiers were upset because of the new special skills forces and late payment with adultered rice. They brought taewongun briefly back to power but was shut down by qing dynasty 3000 troops. King kojong put in power and qing dyunasty influenced over kojong.
Taewŏn’gun
1820: father of king kojong. Since King kojong was very young, Taewongun ruled on his behalf. He was known for his traditionally conservative views and opposing foreign influencde. He was removed from power in 1873 after his son took power but briefly back during teh imo soldier. he reconstructed the kyongbok palace in seoul to strengthen royal power and upheld isionaltionst plicies toweards western nations.
