Condylomata acuminata (genital warts)
caused by HPV
- Transmission through direct skin to skin contact
- Mother to new born
- Usually resolves on its own
Genital Herpes
caused by herpes simplex virus
- Highly contagious
- initial symptoms - tingling, itching and pain in genital area
- Spread by contact with infectious lesions but can also be spread when no lesions/ symptoms are present
Trichomoniasis

Inflammation
Frothy, malodorous, green or yellow discharge
Strawberry spots on the cervix
Cofactor for HIV transmission
Painful urination
Vaginal itching and irritation
Discomfort during intercourse
Bacterial Vaginosis
Imbalance of normal vaginal bacterial flora
Thin, grayish white discharge with foul, fishy odor
Lack of inflammation
Associated with pelvic inflammatory disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes
Chlamydia
Intracellular bacterial pathogen
Asymptomatic or symptomatic
Chlamydia in women s/s
urinary frequency, dysuria, mucopurulent cervical discharge, damage to the cervix and fallopian tubes
- Complications—pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, ectopic pregnancy
Chlamydia in men s/s
urethritis, discharge, dysuria, itching, prostatitis, epididymitis, infertility
- Complications—Reiter syndrome (reactive arthritis)
Gonorrhea
Bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae
Asymptomatic or symptomatic
Can invade bloodstream and affect other organs
Gonorrhea in women s/s
discharge, dysuria, dyspareunia, pelvic pain, vaginal bleeding, fever, proctitis; can move to the fallopian tubes scarring and infertility
Gonorrhea in men s/s
urethral pain; creamy, yellow, bloody discharge; can move to the prostate and epididymis
Syphilis
Spirochete Treponema pallidum
Primary syphilis
chancre at the site of exposure
Secondary syphilis
skin rash, fever, sore throat, stomatitis, nausea, loss of appetite, inflamed eyes, alopecia, genital lesions
Tertiary syphilis
(following latent stage)
delayed response to untreated disease
localized gumma lesions: necrotic lesions in liver, testes and bone
CNS lesions: dementia, blindness, spinal cord injury
cardiovascular effects: scarring of the tunica media of thoracic aorta with aneurysms
