Fluid mechanics Flashcards
BIOMECHANICAL MOVEMENT
1
Q
4 factors that affect drag and air resistance
A
- velocity - the faster the velocity the greater air resistance and drag
- front cross-sectional area - the smaller area the less air resistance
- surface characteristics - the smoother the shape the less negative impact of air resistance and drag
- mass - the heavier the object, the more impact of air resistance
2
Q
what is Bernoulli’s principle
A
Bernoulli’s Principle states that an increase in the velocity (speed) of a fluid (like air) results in a decrease in pressure.
This difference in pressure can generate lift or movement in a particular direction.
- Where a fluid moves faster, pressure is lower.
- Where a fluid moves slower, pressure is higher.
3
Q
what is surface drag
A
the friction between the boundary layer of fluid and surface of object, many sports want to decrease this
4
Q
what is form drag
A
the force affecting the leading edge of an object, no longer concerned with friction but with the shape
