food Flashcards
(18 cards)
explain the consumption of food in diff areas of the world:
- HICs consume alot as they can afford to import & ppl have high income so buy lots
-NEEs consume more as wealth inc - LICs consume less as less food available & cant afford as much
explain the distrubition of food production
- North America & East Asia produce lots
- Africa produces very little
what is food security?
when people eat enough nutritious foods to stay healthy & acitve
why is food consumption increasing?
- rising population more ppl = require more food
- economic development = welathier so but more food , want a bigger variety all year = import more, demand for meat inc
what is food insecurity?
when peoplpe can not get enoguh stay healthy and acrive may become under/malnoursihed
explain the physical factors that affect food supply:
[food insecurity]
- climate not suitanle for famring = cant gorw much food & extreme events e.g floods affect food supply
- water stress = low rainfall or little water for irrigation = struggle to grow food
- pests & diseases = kill crops reduce yeilds & can kill/spread through livestock
explain the human factors that affect food supply:
[food insecurity]
- poverty = dont have own land, cant farm effectively [no fertilisers/pesticides] & cant import
- technology = mechanisation of eqipment increases productivity & increases yeilds e.g GM
- conflict = political relationshipd break down [hard to import] , forced to leave homes, damage agriculure & unsafe
what are the negative impacts of food insecurity?
- famine - 2012 260 000 died in somalia from this
- malnourished
- soil erosion
- rising prices
- social unrest = food shortage/inc prices = riots e.g 2019 Venezuala protests and riots due to food shortage
what are the 6 ways to increase food supply?
- irrigation
- hyrdoponics
- aeroponics
- biotechonology
- new green revolution
- appropriate technology
explain irrigation?
artifically watering land, makes dry areas more productive = increases the yield
what are the 3 types of irriagtion?
- gravity flow - digging ditches/channels to transport rain water to fields
- sprinklers - spraying water across fields
- drip systems - dripping water from small holes in pipes directly onto soil [around crops]
explain hydroponics & aeroponics?
- both grow without using soil
1. plants grow in nutrient solution [supported by gravel etc]
2. plants suspended in air & nutrient water sprayed on to roots of plants
advantages of hydro/aeroponics:
- monitored closely & nutrients adjusted = max yield
- less water needed
- reduced risk of dieseas & pests = less need for pesticides
disadvantes of hyrdo/aeroponics:
- expensive
- only used for high value crops e.g tomatoes
explain biotechnology:
- involves genetic modification :
- higher yieelds
- more can be grow in smaller areas
- higher nutritional value
- disease,pest,drought restistant
concerns with biotechnology:
- may reduce biodiversity = fewer variations created
- long term health affects are unknown
- may interbreed w wild plants = create super weeds & distrupt ecosytems
explain the new green revolution:
- sustainable methods to increase yields e.g :
- GM crops
- organic farming methods e.g crop rotation , soil nutrient recyling & natural predators to control pests
also helps limit enviromental impact
explain appropiate technology [mainly used in LICs]
- increasing yields that are suited to the local enviroment & skills, welath etc
LICs [cheaper methods]: - individual wells
- local materials to make drip irrigation
- planting local species that can cope w local conditions , seeds collected & replanted [cheaper than GM]
