what is an all-air hvac system?
a system that cools or heats spaces by conditioned air alone.
how does an all-air system dispribute air?
an all-air system distributes air to a space with supply + return ducts.
what is a variable air volume (vav)?
an hvac system that varies air flow at a constant or varying temperature.
what is required when a fire wall is penetrated?
a fire damper is required to automatically close to block the spread of fire.
what type of heating system circulates water over coil units in order to deliver heat?
an all-water heating system.
what type of hvac system uses ductwork to supply fresh air and water to heat / cool the air before entering a space?
a terminal reheat system or combination hvac system
what is a chase?
an enclosed vertical space used to accommodate ducts or pipes.
what function does a mixing box serve?
- adjusts the quality or temperature of air going into a space from main air supply lines
- reduces the velocity of air
- attenuates noise
what type of wall includes two runs of studs, separated by several inches?
a chase wall.
what is a toilet carrier?
steel framework that is bolted to the floor inside a pipe chase wall and carries the weight of wall-hung toilets.
describe the five levels of a plenum.
- building structure
- hvac equipment
- sprinkler + plumbing piping
- recessed luminaires
- ceiling
what is an access door?
small, steel doors that allow access to the plenum above a hard ceiling.
what is a slot air diffuser?
a long, narrow diffuser containing 2 - 8 slots.
what is the range of widths for a slot diffuser?
3” - 8”
in what case would one specify a slot diffuser?
when the appearance of the air distribution device needs to be minimized.
what is the term for two or more plastic-insulated conductors encased in a continuous spiral-wound strip of steel tape?
a flexible metal-clad cable.
what are the other names for a flexible metal-clad cable?
- armored cable
- bx
- flex
what is the term for a thin, plat wire laid under a carpet without protruding?
under-carpet wiring.
what is grounding?
a method that prevents dangerous shock if someone touches an appliance with a short circuit.
what is a ground fault interrupter?
a device that detects small current leaks and disconnects the power to the circuit or appliance.
what is an arc fault circuit interrupter?
a device intended to provide protection from the effects of arc faults. functions to de-energize the circuit when an arc fault is detected.
other than a power plan or floor plan, what other drawings could outlet locations be included?
ff+e plans for coordination with furniture placement.
what two major components do plumbing systems consist of?
- water supply
- drainage
what is the term for the plumbing mechanism that catches and holds water to provide a seal that prevents gases from the sewage system from entering the building?
a trap
