At what week gestation does the GI tract appear and complete by?
Appears at 4 weeks and complete by 12 weeks
What is duodenal atresia and what is the most common site?
malformation of the duodenum causing bowel obstruction. Most common site is ampulla of vater
How does duodenal atresia present?
Billous vomiting with the first feed + double bubble of USS imaging
What is exomphalos?
Midline defect of the anterior abdominal wall where some of the organs are contained in a sac and lie outside the abdominal cavity
Name some risk factors for gastroschisis?
Low maternal age, drug misuse, smoking, ethnic origin
What is the omphalomesenteri duct?
A temporary embryonic structure in developing fetuses that connects the yolk sac to the midgut (part of the digestive system)
What is meconium ileus and what can it be a manifestation of?
Unusually sticky and thick meconium blocking the ileum and causing a small bowel obstruction. Can be the first manifestation of cystic fibrosis
What are the most commonly affected sites for Hirschprungs disease? And what is Hirschprungs?
Hirschprungs disease is when there is an absence of ganglion cells in a segment of bowel. The most common sites are sigmoid and rectum

Ileo-caecal junction
