geography - formation of a corrie Flashcards
(9 cards)
1 - north facing hollows
snow collects in the north facing hollow of a mountain, when more snow falls in winter than melts in summer.
2 - glacier
Accumulation of snow then compresses into ice. This snow then starts to move downhill due to gravity.
3- rocks fall loose
Frost shattering can cuase small rocks at the top of the mountain to weaken/become loose. (remember to explain frost shattering)
4 - plucking
The backwall is steepened by plucking (*explain what plucking is)
5 - abrasion
The hollow is deepened by abrasion. (*explain what abrasion is)
6 - rotational sliding
Rotational sliding deepens the central part of the hollow (the rotational omvement of ice around a point) as gravity cuases the ice to move.
7 - friction
Friction cuases ice to slow down at the front edge allowing a rock lip to form.
8 - after ice melts
After the ice melts it can leave a small corrie, lochan/tarn behind.
