Geography - terminal moraine Flashcards
(7 cards)
1
Terminal moraine is a ridge across the valley which is made up of glacial boulder clay, till and other unsorted material deposited by the glacier.
2
As the glacier moves downhill it acts like a bulldozer/plow, pushing sediment to the front of its snout as it goes.
3
On reaching lower altitudes, or when the tempratures rise, the glacier begins to melt and loses power. This means it can no longer carry material and is forced to deposit this moraine.
4
Terminal moraine marks the furthest point the glacier reaches.
5
Once the glacier retreats, the terminal moraine can act as a natural dam.
6
During spells of heavy rain, the valley might flood and allow a ribbon lake to form sealed in place by the terminal moraine.
7
Terminal moraine can reach heights of 20m and extend across the whole valley.
