What was the DAF?
The Deutsche Arbeitsfront (German Labour Front) was the Nazi organisation that replaced all trade unions after they were banned in May 1933.
Who was the leader of the German Labour Front?
Robert Ley, a loyal Nazi and key figure in enforcing Nazi control over the workforce.
What was the main purpose of the DAF?
To control workers, promote Nazi ideology in the workplace, and prevent strikes or demands for better pay/conditions.
How did the DAF maintain control over workers?
Banned strikes and collective bargaining.
Enforced strict discipline and loyalty to Hitler.
Workers couldn’t leave jobs without permission.
Set wage levels.
What was “Strength Through Joy” (KdF)?
A DAF program offering leisure activities, cheap holidays, concerts, and the promise of a Volkswagen to reward and motivate workers.
What was “Beauty of Labour” (SdA)?
A DAF initiative to improve workplace conditions (e.g. better lighting, hygiene) to increase productivity and worker satisfaction.
Did workers benefit economically under the DAF?
No significant improvement — wages were often frozen or reduced, and work hours increased. Workers lost rights and representation.
How did the DAF help Nazi political control?
It eliminated independent labour movements, reduced dissent, and ensured the workforce served Nazi economic and ideological goals.
