What are two parts of the oral cavity?
1) oral vestibule- between teeth and lips
2) oral cavity proper- behind the teeth
tongue- role and 4 papillae
- move food while chewing and forms a bolus for swallowing- role around in lubricating salivar and taste
Lingual Tonsil
Papillae- not all have sensory receptors
- Filiform- provide grip, most numerous
- Fungiform- every where- taste receptors, l
- valate- form a row at back of tongue- contain taste receptors
- foliate- ridge like folds on side of tongue- side
why is taste important
- avoid food thats harmful- taste bad
- 10000- mostly tongue
- least- fungiform
- sweet sour salty bitter umami lipids- smell is import- large amount of “taste” is smell
Oral cavity- tonsils
- Tissues for immune surveillance- (lymphatic tissue)
- patches of lymphatic tissue found at the enterance of the pharynx
- protection against ingested and inhaled pathogens
3 tonsils and location
Lingual tonsils- posterior one/third of the tongue
Palatine tonsils- posterolateral region of the oral cavity
pharyngeal tonsils-
Posterior wall of nasopharynx- adenoids
Salivary glands
cleanses the mouth
dissolve food chemicals sos they can be taste
moistens food and helps compact it to a bolus
Provides lubrication to protect the mouth and oesophagus
contains amylase and lipase to begin digestion carbohydrates and fats
Secretes proteins that help digest nutrients-(e.g b12)
upper git- 3 salivary glands
parotid gland
- largest
- secretes vestibule near - second molar tooth
submandibular gland
- runs below the mucosa (under the tongue)
Sublingual gland
- Under tongue, but more laterally
- smallest
3 parts of Pharynx
-Posterior to the oral cavity, is a cavity that is a common passage way for food, fluids and air
- Pharynx- part of throat behind mouth and nasal cavity
3 types
- nasopharynx
- oropharynx
- laryngopharynx
