Teams - definition
-groups of two or more people who interact or influence each other
-mutually accountable for achieving common goals
What are informal groups
-groups that exist primarily for the benefit of their members
Why informal groups exist
-social needs
-goal accomplishment
-improve employee well-being and reduce stress
Benefits of teams
-better decisions and products
-better information sharing and coordination
-higher motivation due to team membership
Limitations of teams
-individuals are sometimes better than teams
-“process losses” time used for team development instead of actual task
-“social loafing” individuals to give less effort when working in a group compared to alone

What are norms
Informal rules, shared expectations to regulate behaviour
What are roles
A set of behaviours people are expected to perform as they hold positions in a team and organization
Factors that strengthen cohesion
-higher member similarity
-smaller team size
-frequent interaction between members
-higher team success
-more external competition or challenges
Calculus-based trust
Members trust each other because they expect rewards for keeping commitments and penalties for breaking them
Knowledge-based trust
Over time, people learn about each other’s behaviours and motives, allowing them to predict actions
Identification-based trust
-trust is based on mutual understanding and shared values
-team members can predict each others needs and act accordingly without supervision
Shared mental models
Team members have similar images and expectations about the team
Complementary mental models
Each member’s mental model is unique but compatible with others
