I due bambini, immensamente grati per la cortesia della vecchina, entrarono. La casa era piccola ma accogliente e riccamente decorata, piena di suppellettili d’oro e d’argento, e molti altri ornamenti avevano addirittura pietre preziose incastonate.
The two children, immensely grateful for the old woman’s courtesy, entered. The house was small but cozy and richly decorated, full of gold and silver furnishings, and many other ornaments even had precious stones set.
Si accorsero subito che la vecchietta non ci vedeva molto bene, perchè per trovare e dare loro un pezzo di pane e del latte andava cercando a tastoni per tutta la cucina.
They immediately realized that the old woman did not see very well, because to find and give them a piece of bread and milk she was groping around the kitchen.
Dopo la cena li accompagnò in una piccola stanzetta con due lettini, dove Hänsel e Gretel si coricarono e la vecchina diede loro la buonanotte. I due bambini, dopo quella lunga e stancante giornata, caddero in un sonno profondo.
After dinner he accompanied them to a small room with two beds, where Hänsel and Gretel went to bed and the old woman said good night to them. The two children, after that long and tiring day, fell into a deep sleep.
Al mattino seguente Hänsel si svegliò, si stiracchiò un poco ma si accorse subito che non riusciva a muoversi bene. Poi, aperti meglio gli occhi, capì che qualcosa non andava: era rinchiuso dentro ad una grossa gabbia appesa sopra la cucina. Subito prese a gridare.
– Gretel! Gretel!
The next morning Hänsel woke up, stretched a little but quickly realized that he could not move well. Then, opening his eyes better, he realized that something was wrong: he was locked up inside a large cage hanging over the kitchen. He immediately began to scream.
- Gretel! Gretel!
Un istante dopo comparve la vecchietta che spintonava Gretel fin sotto la gabbia di suo fratello.
– Tieni! Dai da mangiare a tuo fratello che deve diventare bello grassottello, così poi potrò farmi un bell’arrosto gustoso! – rise malignamente le vecchia, che uscì dalla stanza.
A moment later the old woman appeared, shoving Gretel into her brother’s cage.
- Here! Feed your brother who has to get pretty chubby, so then I can make myself a nice tasty roast! The old woman laughed maliciously and left the room.
Gretel si avvicinò alla gabbia di Hänsel e gli passò un piatto con un bel pollo arrosto ancora fumante.
– La vecchietta è in realtà una strega cattiva… – mormorò Gretel – mi ha detto che vuole farti ingrassare per poi mangiarti… – continuò la piccola scoppiando a piangere.
Gretel walked over to Hänsel’s cage and handed him a plate of nice, still steaming roast chicken.
- The old woman is actually a wicked witch … - she murmured Gretel - she told me that she wants to make you fat and then eat you … - she continued the little girl bursting into tears.
Non piangere sorellina mia, vedrai che riusciremo a cavarcela in qualche modo – cercò di rincuorarla Hänsel, prendendole e stringendole la mano attraverso le sbarre della gabbia. Poi osservò il pollo e gli venne un’idea…
Do not cry my little sister, you will see that we will manage to get by somehow - Hänsel tried to cheer her up, taking them and shaking her hand through the bars of the cage. Then she looked at the chicken and came up with an idea …
La vecchia strega passava tutto il giorno a preparare deliziose pietanze da far mangiare ad Hänsel, mentre usava Gretel come sguattera per tenere in ordine la casa.
The old witch spent all day preparing delicious dishes for Hänsel to eat, while using Gretel as a scullery maid to keep the house tidy.
Ogni sera poi andava sotto la gabbia appesa di Hänsel e gli ordinava di porgerle il dito così da poterlo tastare e sentire se fosse ingrassato abbastanza da infilarlo nel forno e farci un bell’arrosto.
Every evening then she would go under Hansel’s hanging cage and order him to hold out his finger so that she could feel it and feel if it was greased enough to put it in the oven and make a good roast.
Ma Hänsel sapendo che la vecchia strega era quasi cieca, invece di porgere il suo dito, le porgeva un osso di pollo. La strega tastava l’osso e si rendeva conto che il bambino non era ingrassato per niente.
But Hansel, knowing that the old witch was almost blind, instead of holding out his finger, handed her a chicken bone. The witch felt the bone and realized that the child had not gained weight at all.
– Com’è possibile che non ingrassi mai con tutte le leccornie che ti cucino?! Vabbè, vedremo domani… – e se ne andava via sbuffando.
- How is it possible that I never get fat with all the delicacies I cook for you ?! Oh well, we’ll see tomorrow … - and she went away puffing.
Continuò così quasi per un mese intero, finchè una sera, dopo aver tastato ancora il finto dito di Hänsel, la strega andò su tutte le furie:
This continued for almost a whole month, until one evening, after having felt again Hänsel’s fake finger, the witch went into a rage:
Non è possibile che non ingrassi mai bambino! Ora sono stufa! Ho deciso che ti mangerò lo stesso! – urlò.
It is not possible that I will never get fat baby! I’m fed up now! I’ve decided I’ll eat you anyway! - she screamed.
E così riempì il forno di legna e lo accese mentre Gretel osservava la scena impietrita e terrorizzata.
– Tu! – gridò la strega rivolta a Gretel – infila la testa nel forno e controlla che sia ben caldo!
And so she filled the oven with wood and lit it while Gretel watched the scene frozen and terrified.
- You! - shouted the witch to Gretel - put your head in the oven and check that it is hot!
Gretel intuì al volo che se solo si fosse avvicinata al forno la strega avrebbe buttato dentro anche lei.
– Non ho capito cosa devo fare… – disse con un filo di voce Gretel.
Gretel sensed on the fly that if she only got close to the oven the witch would throw her in too.
- I did not understand what to do … - she said in a faint voice Gretel.
