What are the three components of health and wellbeing?
Physical health, Emotional (mental) health, Social health
What are the average daily calorie intakes for men and women?
Men: 2,500 kcal, Women: 2,000 kcal
What factors affect calorie requirements?
Age, Gender, Height, Energy expenditure (activity level)
What is energy balance in sport?
Matching energy intake (food) with energy expenditure (activity). Unused energy is stored as fat.
What are the three macronutrients?
Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats
What are micronutrients?
Nutrients needed in smaller amounts. Include vitamins, minerals, and fibre.
What is the function of carbohydrates in the body?
Main source of energy for exercise and daily activity.
What is the function of protein in the body?
Helps with growth and repair of muscles. Important for recovery after exercise.
What is the function of fat in the body?
Secondary energy source. Supports cell growth and protects organs.
What is water balance and why is it important?
The amount of water taken in versus water lost. Maintains body temperature and transports nutrients.
What are the effects of dehydration?
Increased heart rate, Slower reaction times, Thicker blood, Muscle fatigue and cramps.
What are the three somatotypes?
Endomorph: wide hips, stores fat easily; Mesomorph: muscular, wide shoulders, narrow hips; Ectomorph: thin, narrow shoulders and hips.
