what is osteoarthritis
a wear and tear condition of the bones and joints that wears down cartilage bc bones rub together causing inflammation, pain, and affects ADL’s
what are the s/s of osteoarthritis
- pain
- swelling
- stiffness
- loss of mobility
- would start to affect ones ADL’s
what are some nursing considerations for osteoarthritis
- ROM exercises
- encourage rest between activities and schedule activities around your peak time like after taking pain medications
- provide heat or cold packs
- provide aids like walkers to keep pressure off joints
- weight management to not put pressure on joints
what is chronic bronchitis
inflammation of the bronchi that causes narrowing and mucus buildup in the lungs making it harder to breath
what are some S/S for chronic bronchitis
- chronic cough (could be productive)
- SOB
- wheezing and crackling in the lungs present
what are some risk factors for chronic bronchitis
- age
- smoking
- genetics
- exposure to toxins like second hand smoking
what is the trade name for albuterol
ariomir
what is the drug class for albuterol
bronchodilator (opens airway for easier breathing)
what is the action for albuterol
a beta 2 drug that allows for easier breathing by increasing cyclic AMP relaxing and opening airways
what is the route for albuterol
- INHALATION
what is the TO for albuterol
causes bronchodilation (causes bronchi to dilate and open up for easier breathing)
what are the use and indication for albuterol
- COPD
- emphysema
- chronic bronchitis
- bronchospasms
- asthma
what are some nursing interventions for albuterol
- assess resp, O2 stats, and lung sounds
- assess if spacer is needed
- assess for paradoxical bronchospasm (narrowed airways) wheezing
list some patient teachings for albuterol
- take medication as prescribed
- report signs of paradoxical bronchospasm, trouble breathing and wheezing
- use medication before other medications and allow 5 min window before taking other meds
what is the trade name for acetaminophen
tylenol
what is the drug class for acetaminophen
antipyretic (reduces fever), non-opioid analgesic
what is the action for acetaminophen
reduces pain and fever by blocking prostaglandins
what is the route Tylenol
- PO
- IV
- rectal
what is the TO for tylenol
reduces pain and fever
what are the use and indications for tylenol
- mild to moderate pain
- fever
- headache
- tooth pain
what are the adverse effects for tylenol
- cause liver damage with large dosages
- cyanosis
- coma
- death
what are the nursing considerations for tylenol
- pain assessment
- assess for allergic reactions when first starting medications
- do liver tests like AST, ALT to check for toxicity and gather baseline of how liver looks and functions before medications
what are the patient teachings for tylenol
- dont take more than the recommended amount
- avoid alcohol or other OTC medications <- can cause liver damage
- know signs of chronic overdose like bleeding, bruising, and fever all signs that liver is being damaged
what is the trade name for iputropium
atrovent
