Brief outline of Lovell rising

A

1486
One of Richard III’s councillors and a close ally of his.
Fled to sanctuary in Colchester Abbey with Thomas and Humphrey Stafford after Bosworth.
April 1486- tried to raise a rebellion in Richard’s old stronghold in Yorkshire whilst Stafords did same in Worcestershire.
Monitored by Henry’s spies and pursued.
Left Sanctuary whilst Henry toured North in April 1486.
Gained little Yorkist support when Lovell fled to Middelham Castle and supressed by armed forces.
Jasper Tudor sent to York proising to paedon all but Lovell and his forces left as he wasn’t a claimant.
Lovell fled to court of Margaret of Burgungy rallied support for Simnel rebellion.

Simnel Rebellion events

A

Simnel was from Oxford
Impersoanted Edward Earl of Warwick and Henry believd John de La Pole was behind the rising.
Jan 1487- Simnel,Symonds and Lincoln land in Dublin.
24th May 1487- Kildare crowns Simnle Edward V King of England in Dublin Cathedral.
Henry paraded real Earl of Warwick disprovig Simnel’s claims.
Ended with rebells being defaeted at Battle of Stoke.

A

Margaret of Burgundy- angered by Usurpation of her brother Richar III(who was also a Usurper). Sheltering Lovell at the time.

The Battle of Stoke date, army sizes, outcome, what did the battle show.

A

4th June 1487 Henry set out with 12,000 troops after hearing that Simnel had landed with 8,000 rebels in Lancashire.
Lincoln killed in battle, Lovell died soon after, Simnel captured and later released.
Forced to retain Kildare as he was so powerful, showing a lack of power and authority.
Fact led to a battle shows ineffectivness of his giov to deal w/ rebels
Military success showed his power and support

Warbeck rebellion brief outline

A

1491-99 (lasted 8 years showing severity of the threat)
Claimed to be Richard Duke of York (not in tower therfore hard to disprove at time).
1495-unsuccessful attempt to invade England, Henry informed by Sir Clifford and Warbeck forced to flee to Scotland and later tried to invade again in 1486 with a small Scottish force on his behalf.
BUT James IV agreed to marry Margaret Tudor forming Anglo-Scot alliance.
1497- Tries to start uprising in Cornwall.

How did Henry punish Warbeck

A

Initially allowed him to stay in his court, showing mercy.
He tried to escpae with Edward Earl of Warwick from Tower of London and they were both executed in 1499 (showing ruthlessness and acting as a detterent).

When did the Yorkshire rebellion take place and what happend

A

1489
Sparked by tax to finace English forces to aid Brittany as Anne of Brittany was going to marry Charles VIII and marry Brittany into France.
April-Earl of Northumbria murdered his retainers allowed a mob to walk in and murder him, as he had fought ofr Richard III in battle.
Rebells defeated outside of York by Earl of Surrey
Only collected £27,000 of £100,000 subsidy agreed to by parliament.
Weak as unable to collect extra ordinary finace.
Strong as dealt w/ before a big battle.

Why was the Simnel rebellion more effective than the Lovell rebellion

A

Simel impresonated a claimant to the throne and acted as a strong figurehead for the rebellion, unlike Lovell who failed to gain suffucient support.

Cornwall Rebellion causes,how many involved,events,outcome

A

Jan 1497- Henry asked for a parliamentary grant of £88,606 as a tax top finance campaign vs James IV and Warbeck.
Rebel leader=Joseph Flammock.
Swet out from Bodmin in May 1497
Due to a tax to fund an invasion of Scotland.
Cornish refused to pay as it did not effect them.
Around 15,000 were involved in this rebellion
Warbeck attempted to exploit this rebellion but failed
Men marched to Blackheath unchallenged, just outside of London, posing a large threat.
Henry had to withdraw troops form Scot boarder( he had sent 25,000 men North for clash w/ James IV) and called it back to London.
Lord Daubeney led King’s army and they killed about 1000 rebels at the Battle of Blackheath
afterwards leaders were put to death.

Edmund de la Pole (Earl of Suffolk)

A

Fled to Flanders in 1498, returned briefly and fled again, securing refuge from HRE Maximillian.
Treaty of Windsor 1506- Suffolk given up by and placed in the Tower of London.
Richard de la Pole still at vlarge and not killed until 1525 at Battle of Pavia.
