HIV/AIDs Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is HIV
A retrovirus containing RNA that converts to DNA and inserted into the host genome by reverse transcriptase
What does HIV bind to with the help of CCR5?
CD4 via gp120
What happens after HIV binds to CD4+ T cell?
Loss of cells expressing CD4+ T cell
- Massive viral replication
What happens to the patient during the first stage of HIV infection?
Flu like symptoms
- Asymptomatic
What cell clears the HIV to allow CD4+ T cells to recover?
CD8+ T cells
What is seroconversion?
Antibodies become apparent in the blood
How does HIV become AIDs?
When there is less than 20% of CD4+ in the body
What are the symptoms of AIDs?
- Oral thrush (Candidiasis)
- Tuberculosis
- Shingles
- Failure of T cell memory
What is Kaposi’s Sarcoma?
Complication of AIDs
How is Kaposi’s Sarcoma caused?
Immunodepletion from HIV
What virus causes Kaposi’s Sarcoma?
Human Herpesvirus 8
What is the HIV latency period?
Slow decline in CD4+ T cells numbers to a threshold point
What is the treatment to HIV?
Human Antiretroviral
Vaccines
