Homeostasis and Response - Diabetes Flashcards
(8 cards)
Although there are two types of diabetes, the key issue is:
patients cannot regulate blood glucose levels because the insulin system is faulty.
Type 1 is caused by
genetic factors, and usually appears during childhood
Why can’t people with type 1 diabetes, regulate blood sugar?
Their pancreas produces little to no insulin.
How is type 1 diabetes treated/ eased?
- patients are injected with insulin after meals, which works in the same way that insulin released by the pancreas would - the amount depends on how sugary the food they eat is.
- exercise more regularly
Why does exercise help those with diabetes?
As more energy is required, more respiration occurs, and more glucose is taken up by the cells to be used in respiration.
Type 2 diabetes is caused by…
an unhealthy, fatty or sugary diet over a long period of time.
Why do people with type 2 diabetes struggle to regulate blood glucose levels?
Their cells are immune to insulin - no matter how much insulin produced by their pancreas, it has no effect.
How is type 2 diabetes treated or eased?
- healthy, low sugar and fat diet
- more exercise
there are some meds that help, but the problem is not with the amount of insulin.
