Human Ear Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is the tympanum and what does it do?
It is the large membrane of the outer ear (Can also be called the eardrum) and sound waves beat against it
What is inside the auditory canal?
Three small bones the hammer, anvil, and stirrup, which increase the force of the vibration and transfer it
What does the stirrup do?
It presses against the oval window
What does the eustachian tube do?
IT connects the throat to the middle ear and equalize air pressure
Where does hearing actually take place?
In the cochlea
What is also the cochlea?
The fluid-filled chamber of the inner ear, it accepts the wave motion that then travels through the vestibular and tympanic canals
What does the hair cells and sensory nerves do?
The hair cells are bent, as the sound waves beat against the sides of the canals and the sensory nerves transmit impulses
What does the autory nerve do?
It carries this information to the brain
What are the semicircular canals and what do they do?
They are apart of the upper inner area, positioned at right angles they are filled with fluid and help to maintain balance
