Flashcards in Huntington disease Deck (9)
HD - effects of blocking dopamine receptors
Improvement of motor function.
Only drug that may treat chorea in HD
Drugs for HD - 3 drugs
Haloperidol, other antipsychotics.
Tetrabenazine - MOA
Reversible inhibition of the human vesicular monoamine transporter type 2 (VMAT2), resulting in decreased uptake of monamines into synaptic vesicles and depletion of monoamine stores (dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine).
Diazepam and benzos- when is it most effective in treatment of HD?
When there are GABA neurons still alive.
Diazepam - adverse effects
Mild respiratory depression
Diazepam - interactions
Alcohol and other CNS depressant potentiate effects.
Cimetidine increases and rifampin decreases serum levels.
Haloperidol - adverse effects
Extrapyramidal side effects and increased prolactin levels.
