Immune System Definitions Flashcards
(21 cards)
Non parasitic antigen capable of causing a hypersensitivity response
Allergen
An attempt by the body to remove the injury stimuli and initiate healing; redness, heat, swelling
Inflammatory Response
A small infectious agent which can multiply only inside a living cell
Virus
Difficult to develop these because they must target the blank without simultaneously harming the host
Antiviral drugs
A one way system that flows only towards the heart, carries lymph.
Lympathic System
Filters and traps for foreign particles, contain B, T, and other immune cells.
Lymph Nodes
Thin, walled, valve structures which carry lymph.
Lymph Vessels
Clear fluid which has WBC.
Lymph
The three major types are natural killer cells, T and B Cells
Lymphocytes
A biological process which protects against diseases by killing pathogens.
Immune System
An infectious agent which causes diseases.
Pathogen
A weakened or killed form of disease which stimulates the body to identify it as foreign
Vaccine
A new case of a disease which exceeds what is expected based on recent experience
Epidemic
An event in which infectious disease spreads throughout the population across a large region
Pandemic
Cells which protect the body by ingesting harmful pathogens
Phagocytes
First line of defense against infection; no change with prior exposure
Innate Immune System
T cells bind to the surface of other cells which display the antigen and trigger a response
Cell mediated
Involves B cells which recognize antigens and pathogens which are circulating in lymph or blood
Humoral response
When enough people in an area are vaccinated, it keeps the small remaining portion of the population safe from disease
Herd immunity
Can be humoral or mediated. Key elements are lymphocytes and antibodies. Activated when innate system fails.
Adaptive Immune System
A large group of unicellular organisms.
Bacteria
