Immuno Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is the only form of treatment for most end stage organ failure?
Transplantation
What is the barrier to transplantation?
Genetic incompatibility of donor and recipient
What are the two ways to prevent graft rejection?
HLA matching and immunosuppression
Host vs. graft responses cause what?
Transplant rejection
Histocompatibility antigens are the target for what?
rejection
When does hyper acute rejection occur? What is it caused by?
Right away. Antibody.
When does acute rejection occur? What is it caused by?
Within days to weeks. It is caused by T cells.
When is chronic rejection seen? What causes it?
Within months or years. Caused by vascular trauma, inflammatory products of T cells, Abs.
Successful organ transplantation depends on what?
use of immunosuppressive drugs
How are grafts classified?
On the basis of genetic relationship between the host and the donor.
What is an autograft?
Graft from same body
What is an isograft?
Grafts exchanged between twins (identical genetics)
What is an allograft?
Grafts between nonidentical members of the same species
What is a xenograft? What makes them different?
Graft exchanged between members of different species. They are susceptible to rapid attack by abs and complement.
What makes a xenograft more successful?
Insertion of human genes into the genomes of the donor animals
