immunotherapy Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is immunotherapy
Harnessing the power of the immune system to fight disease
What is the difference between active and passive immunity after recovery
Passive immunity does not have memory but active immunity leaves the body with memory
What are examples of passive immunity
Snake bites where there is a passive infusion of antibody specific to the toxin
What is IVIg
Replacement therapy in primary and secondary immunodeficiency disorders
What is direct immunotherapy
Antibodies or antibody fragments that detect an antigen on the tumour cell and destroy the target
What is indirect immunotherapy
Activating the immune system so that it can seek and find the tumour cells and destroy them
What is the first line treatment for non-hodgkin lymphoma
Rituximab
What are the 3 E’s
- Elimination - immune system performs surveillance and elimination of precancer cells
- Equilibrium - the cancer is established but controlled by the immune system
- Escape - the cancer mutates and creates strategies to evade the immune system which allows for metastasis
Describe CAR T cell therapy
The CAR T cell is engineered to express antigen-targeted receptors for the tumour antigens - leads to better T cell activation against cancers
