Inferential testing Flashcards
define statistical testing
a way to determine whether hypotheses should be rejected or accepted
if differences or relationhsips between variables are signficant or due to chance
sign test
studies that:
* look for a difference not an association
* used related experimental design - repeated measures
* collected norminal data
- find cacluated value for S (less frequent sign +/-)
- find critical value of S
- S<_ critical value = rejecte null hypothesis
- S>_ accept the null hypothesis
choosing inferential statisitical test
- design of study - related or unrealted
- level of data- ordinal norminal or interval
- difference or correlation being measured
- look at photo of table
define type I errors
incorrect rejection of a null hypothesis which is actually true
**false positive **
define type II errors
failure to reject null hypothesis that is false
false negative
define probability
calculation of how likely it is for an event to happen
5% / 0.05
define significance
how sure we are about a correlation or differnce exisiting
if significant = reject null hypothesis and accept alternative hypothesis
“there is no difference”
“there is a difference”
