Integumentary System Flashcards
(13 cards)
Anatomy
Epidermis
Dermis
Hypodermis
Nails
Protect from injury & infections, grasping & manipulating objects
Location: toes & fingers (epidermis)
Sweat glands
Eccrine sweat glands: protects skin, thermorégulation, excretion of water
Location: everywhere on body, except border of lips, nail beds (dermis)
Apocrine sweat glands: scent glands (pheromone secretion)
Location: axillary regions (armpits), perineal regions (groin)
(Dermis)
Sebaceous glands
Secrete sebum, lubricates & protects skin
Location: everyone on body, except palms of hands & soles of feet
Epidermis
Hair follicles
Anchors hair to skin & grow more hair
Location: head, pubic region, underarms, beard (terminal hair) dermis Throughout body (vellus hair) dermis
Thick skin vs thin skin
Hairless vs hair
Soles of feet, palms of hands, surface of fingers & toes vs. Everywhere else on body
Dermis thinner vs. dermis thicker
Epidermis thicker vs. Epidermis thinner
No skin appendages (except eccrine glands) vs. All diff appendages
Temperature Regulation in Humans
1) hypo. Diff in internal temp
2) signals through nervous system to makes necessary changes
Temperature rises
1) Hypo to sweat glands, produce sweat; And to blood vessels dilate (vasodilation)
2) swear draw out heat with evaporation
- increase surface area of blood, energy drawn out of blood into env.
Temperature decreases
1) blood vessels constrict (vasoconstriction)
2) blood vessels out of contact with skin
Prevents heat loss , shivering
Muscle contractions, goosebumps
Hair stands up, insulator to maintain body heat
Diseases
Skin cancer
Eczema
Alopecia
Skin cancer
Uncontrolled growth of skin cells
Causes:
Exposure to UV light
Symptoms: ABCDE rule
Asymmetry of mole
Border of mole uneven or blurred
Colour changes or varies throughout mole
Diameter of mole greater than 6mm
Evolution of mole over time (indicator of melanoma)
Eczema
Autoimmune disease: skin red & itchy
Causes:
Genetics
Environment
Stress
Symptoms:
Red spots
Itching
Dry, cracked, swollen skin
Alopecia
Autoimmune disease: hair loss
Causes:
Genetics
Stress
Hormonal changes
Symptoms: hair loss
