Function:
Protects and covers internal organs of the body from the external environment, and a barrier for foreign organisms
Epidermis:
outer layer of skin that contains mostly keratin cells. keratin allows epidermis to protect body from physical, chemical or thermal damage. DOESNT HAVE BLOOD VESSELS.
Dermis:
made up of papillary layer under epidermis which connects via papillae. contains phagocytes which destroy bacteria that made it through epidermis. reticular layer contains collagen keeping skin hydrated.
Hypodermis:
connects skin to organs in the body, is a shock absorber, and insulates deeper tissues.
Sweat glands:
Eccrine: found all over the body and it responds to internal and external changes in temp and produces sweat to regulate body heat.
Apocrine: found mostly in genital areas, functions during puberty
Accessory organs:
sweat glands, oil glands, hair and nails
Structures:
skin, hair, nails, glands and ducts
Maintain healthy system:
use sunscreen, wash hands regularly, stay hydrated, regularly moisturise
Dermatitis:
inflammation of the skin that results in red, itchy and inflamed skin, caused by irritants such as chemicals or allergic reactions.
Interaction with Immune system:
The skin is the first line of defence and acts as a barrier for pathogens trying to enter the body.
